Day 3: Cleanup at the Mangroves

We were up bright and early this morning for some hands-on cleanup action at the mangroves of Pasir Ris Park.

For many of our participants, it was their first time visiting a mangrove ecosystem — a fitting follow-up to our earlier session with Professor N. Sivasothi, who shared about his conservation work and how Singapore’s mangroves have been recognised and protected over the years.

Mangroves may not be the most frequented spaces, but they play a crucial role as carbon sinks, nurseries for marine life, and natural coastal barriers. When trash accumulates in these environments, it can entangle marine organisms or degrade habitat quality — threatening delicate ecosystems.

🦀 During the cleanup, we found a horseshoe crab — a species that has existed for over 450 million years. It served as a quiet reminder that these ancient creatures depend on us to keep their habitats safe.

As we wrapped up the final day of the Leaders Academy, it was time to say goodbye to old acquaintances and new friends. It’s always humbling to hear the stories that brought each person here — some travelling abroad alone for the first time and gaining new perspectives, others seasoned travellers still moved by the power of connection and shared purpose.
